About this place

Tucked behind the Ganesh Himal range, Tsum Valley was closed to foreigners until 2008 and remains one of Nepal's least-visited trekking regions. The valley is a living museum of Tibetan Buddhist culture — ancient monasteries cling to cliff faces, prayer flags stretch across gorges, and villagers still trade with Tibet over high passes. The trek follows the Budhi Gandaki river through narrow gorges before opening into a broad, sun-filled valley at 3,000-3,700m. Unlike the Annapurna Circuit, you won't see another trekker for days. Highlights include Mu Gompa (one of Nepal's oldest monasteries), the self-mummified monk at Milarepa's Cave, and the stunning Ganesh Himal views from Ngula Dhojhyang pass. Requires a restricted area permit ($35/week) and a registered guide. Best season: March-May and October-November.
