Rara Lake — Nepal's Largest & Most Remote Lake

Mugu, Jumla

Rara National Park, Mugu District

About this place

Nepal's biggest lake sits at 2,990m in the far-western Mugu district, surrounded by dense pine and juniper forests. Despite being a national park, Rara sees fewer than 1,000 visitors per year — a fraction of what Phewa Lake gets in a single day. The water is impossibly clear, shifting between deep blue and emerald depending on the light. In autumn, the surrounding hills blaze with red and gold foliage. There are no hotels — just a few basic lodges and a campsite on the southern shore. The nearest airport is Talcha, a 45-minute flight from Nepalgunj followed by a 2-hour walk. That remoteness is exactly the point. At dawn, when mist lifts off the glassy surface and the only sound is birdsong, you understand why locals call it the Queen of Lakes.
