About this place

Before Kathmandu was the capital of unified Nepal, Nuwakot was Prithvi Narayan Shah's strategic stronghold. The seven-story Nuwakot Durbar palace sits on a hilltop overlooking the Trisuli valley with Ganesh Himal as backdrop — yet almost nobody visits. The palace complex includes the Saat Tale Durbar (seven-story tower), Rang Mahal (painted palace), and several temples in various states of restoration. The surrounding town retains its 18th-century Newari character with traditional houses, stone water spouts, and narrow alleys. Only 2 hours drive from Kathmandu (68km via Kakani), Nuwakot makes an excellent day trip combinable with rafting on the Trisuli River. The Famous Farm resort nearby offers organic farm stays with palace views. October-March is ideal when the Himalayan backdrop is crystal clear.
