About this place

Hidden down a narrow side street near Taumadhi Square in Bhaktapur, Newa Lahana serves the most authentic Newari feast experience you can find. The samay baji set is a ceremony on a plate — beaten rice, spiced potatoes, black soybeans, dried buff, boiled egg, spinach, lentil patties (bara), pickled radish, and aila (rice spirit). Everything is served on a traditional leaf plate. The chatamari (often called 'Newari pizza') — a rice-flour crepe topped with minced meat, egg, and spices — is exceptional here. The restaurant occupies a restored Newari house with low wooden ceilings and brick walls. No English menu — point at what other tables have or ask the owner to recommend. Budget Rs. 400-600 for a full feast with drinks. An absolute must-visit after exploring Bhaktapur Durbar Square.
