About this place

Perched on a ridge just 5km from central Kathmandu, Kirtipur is the Kathmandu Valley's most underrated Newari town. This ancient fortress city resisted Prithvi Narayan Shah's unification campaign longer than any other — the king cut off the noses and lips of its male population in retribution (a dark history the town doesn't forget). Today Kirtipur is a maze of narrow brick lanes, ancient temples, and hidden courtyards that most Kathmandu visitors never discover. The Bagh Bhairav Temple houses centuries of weaponry, the Chilancho Stupa offers panoramic valley views, and the Uma Maheshwar Temple contains some of the finest stone carvings in Nepal. The town is famous for its juju dhau (king of yogurt) and Newari feasts. No entry fee, no tourist buses, just authentic daily life 20 minutes from Thamel.
