One woman has been cooking bara (Newari lentil pancakes) at this tiny stall in Bhaktapur for 53 years. She makes everything herself — grinding the lentils, mixing the batter, frying each bara to golden perfection on a massive iron griddle. The specialty is bara topped with egg and minced buffalo, served with tama (fermented bamboo shoot) soup poured directly over it. The combination of crispy lentil pancake, runny egg, spiced meat, and tangy bamboo soup is one of the greatest bites in Nepal. The stall has no name sign — just ask anyone near Pottery Square for 'Aamako Bara' and they'll point you there. Costs Rs. 50-80 per serving. She starts cooking around 8am and closes when she runs out, usually by 2pm. Get there early.
